INTRODUCTION TO LAW

INTRODUCTION TO LAW

TEST 1: MALAYSIAN LEGAL SYSTEM AND CONTRACT LAW
This test carries 25% out of 100% marks. I personally think that the area of malaysian legal system and contract law is easy compared to tort. I learned that Malaysia is different to other country because the legislature and executive in Malaysia sit together. I also understand that contract is important because it bind the legal relationship between offeror and matching offeree. If anyone of them breach the contract, they will be punish in 3 ways which are damages, injunction, and specific performance. So, contract is important to protect our benefit if other is going to breach the contract.

TEST 2: TORT
This test carries 25% out of 100% marks. I think that tort is harder compared to malaysian legal system and contract and I do not know why. I learned that the aim of tort is to provides damages and injucntion. Tort is important because it can help to initiate a legal proceeding against another person in the absence of contractual relationship between the parties. This means that we can sue other although we do not have any contractual relationship with another person. Tort tells me that when other person failed to take care of their neighbour, interfere with other person enjoyment of land and personal interest or trespass to people, land or goods, we can sue them under tort. So, tort is important to protect us when we do not have contractual relationship with other people.

BUILDING MATERIAL

Module Teaching Objectives
The teaching objectives of the module are:
1. To introduce various types of building materials used in current construction practice.
2. To create an understanding of the choices designers make in choosing building materials based on the
properties of these materials.
3. To differentiate the suitability of materials and significance in utilizing those materials in relation with
building’s functions.

Module Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Explain the use, physical and chemical properties of the type of building materials.
2. Summarize the effect of building materials on construction and structural qualities.
3. Analyze problems associated with different materials used.

Mid-term Test
In this test, we are required to study many topics of building materials like concrete, ceramic, stone, rubber, timber, glass. However, the lecturer was decided to come out the questions in multiple choice question form since we have so much topics to study and this really helps to reduce out stress and tension.
In the end of this test, I am able to answer all the question since it is a multiple choice question.

Assignment 1
Students in groups (Maximum 5 members) are required to carry out a presentation on a building material assigned to them by referring to at least 2 books as per the reference list (but not limited to). The presentation should include the types, application method, physical and chemical properties, special function and characteristics whichever applicable.
Our group was assigned to do a research on ceramic. Ceramic is one of the most common building materials that were used in construction industry. We are lucky because our lecturer had given us a lecture on ceramic before the presentation of this assignment.
In the end of this assignment, we are able to finish our topic well since we just have to do some research on ceramic and read the information on the slide about ceramic that was given by our lecturer.

Assignment 2
This assignment is to be carried out in group of 4-5 students per group.

In the end of this assignment, I had learned about plaster board and stainless steel in
details after I do some research on them. I am able to differentiate plaster board and
concrete after finish this assignment. I also learned that why stainless steel do not rust in
most condition.
This assignment is divided into 2 parts : Part A  and Part B

PART A (REPORT) – 30%
Within the group each to select one (1) of the building materials and prepare a report

PART B  – SAMPLE BOARD – 20%
By referring to the specific building material that you have been assigned to, you need to
SELECT AND IDENTIFY 3 types of different products of a particular building material and
to further EXPLAIN AND COMPARE those 3 selected different  products of the same
building material.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY 1

TEST 1
The area of question in this test is quite big since we were required to study foundations, roof, temporary works, concrete framed building and so on. Since there were so many topics come out in this test, the lecturer told us that the question will be easy and there will be a question about sketching a diagram.
In the end of this test, I can answer almost all the question since it is easy as what my lecturer does said.

ASSIGNMENT 1
This is a group assignment. This assignment required us to take the building we live in as the object of study and the information need to be different from the the slide which is given by the lecturer as possible. The task was divided into 3 parts. We were required to complete all the 3 parts in order to score good marks in this assignment since it carries 25% out of 100% marks.
In the end of this assignment, I had learn more types of foundations that are applied is foreign country and the characteristic of different roofs. The 3 parts are as following:

Part 1
Illustrate the type of the building with sketches / photo / diagrams, the function of the building
and hence list out the requirements / criterion of the building.

Part 2
Identify and explain the (i) type of foundation, (ii) type of slab and (iii) type of roof of the
building with sketches / photo / diagrams.

Part 3
Compare and contrast with TWO (2) other types and recommend an alternative to replace

the existing type.

MEASUREMENT 1

MEASUREMENT 1

Module Teaching Objectives
The teaching objectives of the module are:
1. To develop an understanding of the principles of measurement and techniques in preparing the Bills of
Quantities and Specification writing.
2. To develop an awareness of the nature, content, and significance of tendering and contractual
documentation.
3. To have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the Standard Method of Measurement in taking-off
quantities.

Module Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Explain and able to interpret clauses in the Standard Method of Measurement (SMM) and adopt a systematic approach to take-off quantities from drawing for the various trades in relation to sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.
2. Distinguish and illustrate differences in writing-up descriptions in accordance to design changes for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.
3. Evaluate the relationship between Specifications, Drawings and Bill of Quantities in Tender Documents for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.
4. Generate a conceptual understanding of and the ability to competently carry out the preparation of the Bills of Quantities for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.

Mid-term test
This is a test on measurement of all structural works. The main aim is to test the understanding of clauses in the Standard Method of Measurement 2.
Although the mark given is not high but in the end of this test, I had understand the principles of measurement and able to measure out all the elements studied.

Assignment 1: Group Project
The task of this project is to measure all structural works from work below to reinforced concrete frame works and the production of tender documents of a particular building.
The aim is to develop awareness of the nature, content and significance of tendering and contractual documentation and the ability to produce the Bills of Quantities and Specification writing.
The assignment given was based on the real construction work. It is very important because it enable student to learn more and more in order to finish this assignment. Student was also given a chance to learn to look and understand the professional drawing by architecture and engineer. In the end of this assignment, I had gain better understanding on how to calculate suspended beam and floor slab.

Assignment 2: Report
The aim is to understand the practical aspect of construction techniques in comparison to the theory aspect in books and its application on site and witness the usage of construction equipment on site including mechanical plants. In this assignment, I had given a chance to explored the various type of building materials and construction technology. I am also exposure to actual working environment on site and safety on site.
This assignment is quite important because it enable students to gain better understanding about building materials through the real object instead of the diagram in the text book. In the end of this assignment, I had learned building materials in details after I visit the site.
